Drawing inspiration from movies ranging from "Chasing Amy" to "Scream", "Harry Potter" to "Dawn of The Dead", and a good dose of "Highlander" and "Serenity", the first draft of NVZ was completed in early 2007. An extensive reworking was done in Late 2007 to reflect character based comedy and drama similar to "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" and "Lost", emphasizing character conflict and twenty‐something disenfranchisement.

It was during this time that the writer‐director Justin Timpane welcomed his first child, and subsequently brought on Daniel Ross and Arthur Rowan to assist with readings and editing of the screenplay. Based in Montgomery County Maryland, countless hours were poured into developing rich, complete characters and conflicted character arcs. Soon after this, Rowan was offered the chance to perform and choreograph fights for the Pennsylvania Renaissance Festival and had to scale back his role to Fight Choreographer.

After relocating to Warrenton, VA, Timpane brought on Cory Okouchi to fill the gap left by Arthur Rowan. Having performed beside Timpane in the past, Okouchi brought with him a long list of talented performance and technical contacts within the Washington, DC theatre community.

Timpane was able to acquire the funds needed for a production budgeted at just less than $10,000, and casting was completed in March 2008. Drawing auditionees from as far apart as New Jersey and North Carolina, the vast majority of the cast remained from the Washington, DC area.

In an unusual pre‐production step, Timpane shot a preliminary version of the film entirely in his own basement and property in front of a green screen, a process dubbed by the cast and crew as “The PreVis”. This process allowed the largely untested production crew to work out the kinks and figure out shot for shot what was going to need be accomplished. This also allowed the cast to become intimately acquainted with their characters and each other. It was at this time that NVZ gained the asset of Will Stendebeck – a young jack of all trades who intuitively knew how to create anything and everything the production would need, and PJ Megaw – a young actor with a passionate understanding of Martial Arts.

Principal photography began in May 2008, and has spanned the Washington DC metropolitan area, including Leesburg, Manassas, Warrenton, Gainesville, and more. Utilizing locations that had their own unique flavors, beauty, depth and fanbases (i.e. independently owned moviehouses, comic book stores, coffee shops, etc) the production continues to seek out and partner with undiscovered talent in our area, giving them the chance to shine that they deserve..
